Basically, Blacks and Hispanics (since this article relates to the state of New York, probably Puerto Ricans) are flunking the literacy test that is required to become a schoolteacher in the New York public schools.
A few choice quotes and my commentary from the article:
“New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it.”
Ever notice all the fun and great things we are no longer allowed to do anymore in America because minorities can’t make the grade? When I was younger and more naive, I always assumed the purpose of the school system was to educate children in order to produce law-abiding, employable citizens. In truth, the education system is an indoctrination platform and jobs racket for leftist cadres. The kids aren’t meant to be served; they’re chattel.
“Leaders of the education reform movement have complained for years about the caliber of students entering education schools and the quality of the instruction they receive there. A December 2016 study by the National Council on Teacher Quality found that 44 percent of the teacher preparation programs it surveyed accepted students from the bottom half of their high school classes.”
Well, that’s no surprise there. As I have written previously on this blog, education majors headed for graduate school had some of the lowest scores on the GRE among all majors (the average is normed to a score of 1000; ed majors bat in the high 900’s). Most schoolteachers are idiots, which I know because most education majors I met in college were idiots (and usually female idiots to boot). This article paints an even worse picture, as teachers are being recruited from the bottom half of high school student bodies.
There are several reasons for the gravitation of idiots toward public education. The people I met who were education majors are (with noble exception) profoundly stupid and lazy, and wanted nothing to do with high-level mathematics (especially females). Unfortunately for them, jobs that require high-level mathematics tend to pay a lot more than professional babysitting. People with genuine brains have better places to reward their talents than the public school system.
“The reformers believe tests like New York’s Academic Literacy Skills Test can serve to weed out aspiring teachers who aren’t strong students.
But the literacy test raised alarms from the beginning because just 46 percent of Hispanic test takers and 41 percent of black test takers passed it on the first try, compared with 64 percent of white candidates.”
First of all, I find it ridiculous that only 64% of the whites were able to pass what I am going to guess is a fairly easy exam (later in the article, the test is described as “12 grade level”). The fact that less than half of the blacks and Hispanics could pass it is more of a testament to their intrinsic cognitive shortcomings than testing bias.
“Having a white workforce really doesn’t match our student body anymore,” Soodak said.
For starters, who had the brilliant idea to ethnically cleanse the whites from New York? Secondly, why does the teacher ethnicity and student ethnicity have to match? Is there any empirical studies that indicate a significant boost in information retention and skill mastery when students are taught by teachers of their same ethnicity? Wasn’t racial segregation supposed to be an awful, dehumanizing system? Does Professor Soodak advocate white teachers only teaching white students?
(Oh… and for inquiring minds… yes, Dr. Soodak is indeed white.)
“Kate Walsh, the president of National Council on Teacher Quality, which pushes for higher standards for teachers, said that blacks and Latinos don’t score as well as whites on the literacy test because of factors like poverty and the legacy of racism.
“There’s not a test in the country that doesn’t have disproportionate performance on the part of blacks and Latinos,” Walsh said.”
Ms. Walsh and I are in complete agreement – but probably not for reasons she would approve of. There is no test of cognitive ability that can be designed that will not display stratification by race – a byproduct of stratification by IQ.
Also, Ms. Walsh might want to read up on studies comparing the performance of poor young white students with the offspring of wealthy blacks. The result? Black underachievement, despite being sired into privilege.
The reader should note that very little of what the article says pertains to the children, and is mostly about the charlatans teaching them. To reiterate, the purpose of public education is not to educate children, but to instead miseducate and lubricate them for swallowing bigger lies as adults. It also serves the dual purpose of serving as a jobs program for human garbage – unemployable leftist charlatans posing as “educators,” who cannot provide any skills whatsoever to a technologically-advanced First World country.
The pay that teachers get sucks – but paradoxically, I am not saying we pay the current bad batch more. Instead, we fire all of the current bad crop of teachers, and replace them with highly-paid subject matter experts. Cranking up the pay for the current bad crop would only lead to higher donations to the Democratic National Committee, or being otherwise squandered.
